Obituary of Helen Frances Pyontek
Helen Frances Pyontek, of Lafayette, NJ, formerly of Boonton, passed away peacefully on Friday, April 19, 2024. She was 104 years old.
Helen was born at home to John and Agnes (Hornik) Virostek in East Vandergrift, PA in December 1919. She graduated from East Vandergrift High School, before moving to Highland Avenue in Boonton, NJ.
Helen commuted to Manhattan to work in an office on Fulton Street for the Railroad. She studied nursing at St. Mary’s Hospital in Passaic in 1943. She then began working at the U.S. Army’s Picatinny Arsenal in Morris County, sewing gun powder bags during World War II, before transferring to be a Secretary for an Officer.
Helen met her future husband, William Pyontek, at a dance at the Sokol USA Lodge 32 (a Czech Gymnastics Center) in Boonton, following his service in the U.S. Army in the Korean War. They married in 1952 and settled in Boonton to raise their family.
Helen enjoyed dancing, bowling, going to casinos, her scratch-off lottery tickets, traveling with her daughters, and spending time with her family. She attended the County College of Morris as a lifelong learner. She was a parishioner of Saints Cyril & Methodius Church in Boonton for most of her life.
Helen was predeceased by her beloved husband, Bill and her siblings, Paul Virostek, Mary Schnabel, Irene Benson, and Alice Generoso. Helen is survived by her son, William C. Pyontek and his wife, Dr. Maria Pyontek; her daughters, Janet and her husband, Richard Kalwa; and Marlene and her husband, Gary Flyte; her grandchildren, Jason and his wife, Jessica; Christopher and his wife, Jenny; Kaitlyn and her boyfriend, Dan; Randy, Brian and his girlfriend, Jennifer; Billy; and Kyle; and her great-grandchildren, Alana, Ethan, and Connor.
Visitation with the family will be on Sunday, April 28th from 2:00 to 5:00pm at Codey & Mackey Funeral Home of Boonton. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated in Saints Cyril and Methodius Roman Catholic Church in Boonton on Monday, April 29th at 10:00am followed by interment with her husband at Brigadier General William C. Doyle Veterans Memorial Cemetery, Wrightstown, NJ.
