Obituary of Patricia Ann Tourelle
Patricia Ann (Smith) Tourelle, 96, of Lake Hiawatha, NJ, passed away on Monday, February 19, 2024, at St. Clare’s Hospital in Denville after suffering a stroke three days prior. She passed peacefully and on her own terms.
Born to Wesley and Zelma (Larmore) Smith in July 1927, Pat attended Centenary College and The Mill School to become a kindergarten teacher. She taught for 29 years before retiring in 1979 from the Parsippany - Troy Hills Board of Education. Pat married Frederic Tourelle in 1949. They built their home in Lake Hiawatha, taking great pride in it and she resided there for the rest of her life.
In retirement Pat liked to knit mittens for local children and relatives. She was also active in SCEEP, the Suburban Cultural Education Enrichment Program. Pat tutored students from the Newark School District. She shared a love of classical music with her husband. They were supporters of the New Jersey Symphony Orchestra and the New York Metropolitan Opera. Pat was an avid reader and lover of all things cat. Even in her 90s she read several large print books at once.
Predeceased by her husband, Fred; Pat is survived by her loving nephew, Kevin W. Smith of Lake Hiawatha, NJ; and nieces, Allison Castano of Westminster CO; Jennifer Slobodin of CA and Katie McCullough of NM.
