Charles V. Marti, 94, Former Mayor of Mountain Lakes, NJ
Charles V. Marti died on Saturday, April 8, 2023 in Port St. Lucie, FL. He was 94 years old.
Chuck was born in Orange, NJ in October 1928 and lived most of his life in New Jersey. He received his bachelor’s degree in journalism and liberal arts in 1950 from Syracuse University. While at Syracuse he was a writer for the Daily Orange; a member of Tau Theta Upsilon; a senior men’s honorary member of Sigma Delta Chi, the society of professional journalism; the president of his fraternity, Phi Kappa Psi; and a member of the Varsity Club - having earned letters in boxing, soccer and lacrosse. Following graduation Chuck received the University’s Outstanding Alumni Award in 1973. He was a Director of the Alumni Association and served on the Syracuse University Athletic Board.
Before going into the Armed Forces, Chuck was the Promotion Manager of WAER radio station in Buffalo, NY. Subsequent occupations were President of Charles Marti Corporation; CEO, Rauch Industries; Sales Executive, VIP Honda; Sales Manager-Rentals, Joe Tekula Realtors Century 21. After retirement as a realtor in 2005, he devoted his remaining years to performing as an actor and stand-up comedian. Chuck was a member of the Actors’ Equity Association, the Screen Actors Guild and the American Federation of Radio and Television Artists.
Mr. Marti moved to Mountain Lakes from Florham Park in 1964. He was the town’s Public Safety Director, Police Commissioner and served several terms on the Borough Council. He was elected Mayor in 1973. In his later years he lived in Boonton, Allamuchy and Budd Lake. In Boonton he was President of the Spruce Hill Condo Association and served as Trustee on the Arts Council of Morris. In Allamuchy he served on the Election Board. He was a veteran of the U.S. Army during the Korean War, serving as a Second Lieutenant, Infantry.
Chuck’s beloved wife, Frances died in 1991, his cherished daughter, Kimberly Naunton died in 2009 and his loving sister, Marie Welsh of Avon, CT died in 2020. He is survived by his devoted son, Charles Frederick Marti; his son-in-law, Nick Naunton; his granddaughters, Cindy Michelle Martin and her husband, Jeff; and Pamela Frances Marti and her husband, William; and his great-grandchildren, Matteo, Alexa, and Julia Martin.
A Memorial Mass will be celebrated on Monday, May 1st at 10:00am in St. Catherine of Siena Church, Mountain Lakes. Sympathies may be shared with the family on Sunday, April 30th from 1:00 -4:00pm at Codey & Mackey Funeral Home, Boonton. Interment will be private.
