Remembrance from Joe
We first met in high school in 1966. Maureen's intelligence, beauty, wit & charm attracted my attention; however, without success of starting a relationship. I was fortunate to meet her again in 1971 and we began dating shortly thereafter. We both graduated college in 1973 and we were married later that year. Maureen loved to read and write. Her reading of Melville's Moby Dick led us to honeymoon on Nantucket and fall in love with the Island. We visited every year. Maureen planned everything for us. This included our living locations, home purchases, cars & motorcycles, and starting a family. We have a son, Kyle Joseph. Maureen raised Kyle and she always focused on encouraging friendship and love. To sum it up, Maureen was wonderful!! Our love and friendship lasted all of this time and it will continue to last forever. I look forward to being with her again in the next part of our lives. Every day I can feel her presence. Love you, Joe

Tribute to Maureen O’Neill/Mom/Nana Maur,
As an astute grammarian and woman of literature, my Mom wouldn’t want anything less than for me to write some type of literary piece regarding the knowledge and qualities that she has instilled in me during my lifetime. Mom loved learning and education. She became so involved in my own education at a young age, always reading to me and teaching the structure of writing. I truly enjoy writing and someday may aspire to create my own work in the literary field. She was proud of what I had accomplished and what I will continue to create in my future.
The “Kyle” Tapes are one of my first memories as a child. My Mom loved to document the progressions in my life through video and photography. The “Kyle” tapes document each of my first 10 years of life on VHS tapes. Mom also categorized all of the photos from our journeys and travels in albums (always labeled with detail with dates and events). It was these types of memories that gave me the urge to get into the world of photography and videography and hold this as my passion and hobby on a daily basis still today!
Mom had dogs, and then cats and then another dog… my lifetime existed mostly with cats. She loved animals and nature and this has been ingrained into me. I am an avid lover of nature and the critters that surround us. I had a love and connection to the many cats, dogs, birds, fish and other animals that I considered to be my pets throughout my life. I would take great pride and care for them and they weren’t so much as pets, but more so companions for me to teach me about responsibility, compassion, and the true beauty of our natural world. I thank Mom for this as she enjoyed my connection with the outdoor world. When I was 3 years old, she took me to adopt my own cat. He was a black, short-haired, mix from a shelter whom I named Ticey II. The story of the name Tice stemmed from what my Mom told me was the original builder of her and my dad’s Clifton house. She had named her black cat back then Tice. Now my family has Tice the III, again a black, short-haired mix from the shelter who is just an absolute sweetheart of a cat.
Baseball was one of my Mom’s favorite sports and she loved her New York Yankees. Growing up in the 90’s with a Dad who routed for the Mets and Mom who routed for the Yankees gave me little choice.. I was coerced into being a Yankee fan! Coincidentally, I grew up loving Derek Jeter, Paul O’Neill, David Cone, Mariano Rivera and many many more great players. My Mom would enjoy cheering them on with me as baseball became my favorite sport at an early age. This led to her taking me to every practice, game and event for little league, rec, school and any other baseball function. Mom traveled around the country with my Dad and I as we did a stadium tour beginning in 2002. Mom also never missed any of my high school or college games as I continued playing baseball until 2012 for the Drew University Rangers Division III Baseball Program. Her support shined through not only with her presence at the games, but her snacks, lunches, and gifts to the team. Her generosity didn’t end with my days of playing baseball. Mom continued to support all of the teams which I went on to coach in my days after college. I coached youth Ice Hockey for 11 years, and am currently coaching soccer and baseball now. Mom would bring food and snacks for my players to games and wouldn’t miss many of the games I coached either! She was truly dedicated to my life events and I cannot even explain how remarkable this was.
Whether it was a phone call in the morning on my way to school or checking my email to find a science article that would spark a new lesson, these were the moments I would look forward to each and every day. My Mom worked in the educational system for her entire lifetime, and she was more than excited when I told her that I was going to double major in the sciences and education that one day in 2010. I was very blessed to have my Mom’s help and guidance into the world of education and it became a calling to me! I was drawn into it and never looked back. I have been teaching for 11 years now and followed in my Mom’s footsteps by not only teaching the youth everyday, but designing the curriculum for two courses which I currently teach (Forensic and Marine Science), and redesigning the curriculum for my favorite subject which I had majored in at Drew University, Environmental Science. Mom enjoyed hearing all of the adventurous lessons and chances that I loved to take to expand the range of learning to new levels and break barriers by doing what she taught me, be yourself and stay true to what you believe.
There are never enough words to describe all the moments in my Mom’s lifetime. However, there is another memory that will stay with me forever and that is when my daughter Mildred (Millie), Maureen’s granddaughter, was born. My Mom, called Nana Maur by her grandchildren, loved children and she made sure that little Millie got the love and attention that she also gave to me when I was young. Nana Maur would love to read to her and saw Millie begin to speak and learn very early on. They would have the funniest conversations about nature, food, disney princesses and more. I am blessed that my son, Kyle Jr. was born in 2020 and Nana Maur also was able to enjoy time with her grandson too! She loved them so much and the joy I could see in her eyes while around them made every day that much brighter than before.
Thank you Mom for everything you did and will continue to give to me throughout eternity. I know you are always around and I can feel you as a part of me everyday. You’ve raised me incredibly well and now my own family (My wife Amandalynn, older daughter Mildred Mary, son Kyle Jr., youngest daughter FrancesJean Catherine, Ticey III) will continue your legacy as there is a lot of Nana Maur that comes out everyday. When my children smile and laugh, I hear you smiling and laughing too, Mom. Grá go Deo (Graw gu djo) translated as “Love Forever” in Gaelic is a phrase I will keep dear to me as you, Mom, taught me many important aspects of our heritage and beginnings. Mom taught me to be kind to those around you but never back down for what you truly stand for… (this ends in a preposition which Mom would be upset about and these small grammatical faux pas would keep fun witted humor between me and her so i’ll keep it that way since this will never end… i’ll leave the spelling and grammar check to you Mom) Thank you and until we meet again.
Your son,
Kyle

Fran and I have had the honor of knowing Maureen for many years especially since the birth of Kyle her brilliant son. He is in part so brilliant thanks to her love and dedication to his education and great upbringing and the fruits of that labor will stand as a living tribute to her. She was a generous person with her church and friends and a loving wife who was a best friend to Joe. She will be missed by all and it is hard to think she will not be here to see her beloved grandchildren Mildred and Kyle junior grow up. May God keep her in his heart for eternity.

I'm writing this from Ireland with a heavy heart.
Maureen was, for a short time in her life but hugely significant and formative time in mine like a mother to me. I taught Irish (Gaelic) at Drew University and New York University on a Fulbright scholarship and did part of a masters subsequent to this at Drew University.
I remember her first letter reaching me with her beautiful handwriting. Maureen attended one of my public lectures and wanted to meet. Maureen was doing some family history searching and she was interested in Belfast, I am from Belfast and had come from there for the teaching scholarship, Maureen's father was born in Belfast. We soon realised that her family in Belfast grew up and around the same small enclave of streets (we actually think the same street of about 30 terraced houses) where my family are from, and in this community where I still live to this day. My family and Maureen's family most definitely knew eachother as the community to this day is very tight knit and working class.
Maureen's father was baptised in St. Peter's Cathedral, on the lower Falls Road in west Belfast, as were many of my family at that time.
I eventually went to live with Maureen and Joe, as many Irish young people have done in the past in the Eastern United States, particularly through the 70s, 80s and 90s when there was trouble in the north of Ireland.
Maureen was a beautiful, inspiring, thoughtful, courageous and extremely intelligent woman.
Maureen was a great friend of mine and had so much empathy for those out there without much in the world. When people here in Belfast ask me about America and Americans more broadly, I speak about my experiences with Maureen and Joe; our sightseeing, our days out, the love Maureen had for others and from my perspective her empathy and perspective on those who wanted to experience a better life in the U.S.
Maureen (and Joe) holds a very special place in my family's heart. They gave me a home out of the goodness of their heart when I didn't have one. Maureen even tried to link me up with an American girl once by ambushing me and asking her to dinner with me without my prior knowledge! (I still laugh when I think about this - she wanted to keep me in the U.S!)
I love you Maureen and as long as I speak your name you will never really be gone.
Please look after Niall, Thomas and baby Joseph up there.
Love, Tony

She was my teacher. All the girls wanted Ms. O’Neill. She was so beautiful. She read Peter Rabbit to us in French. She introduced us to and quoted from The Little Prince. Young days, Joe and Maureen took me here, there, and everywhere in the city. Countless plays, dinners..The Four Seasons…dancing at The Limelight, the Beatrix Potter exhibit at the Pierpont Morgan stand out. One crazy girls trip to Vermont . She was my friend. Later years.. Joe, Maureen, Bruce, and I, so many wonderful lunches, dinners, and celebrations at ECCC. Same time next year friends. Holiday concerts, plays,…Maureen’s love..The Nutcracker. So many memories with Kyle and his now beautiful family. Fun times at Drew U. She was my teacher. So many decades later coming to teach in my very own classroom. Ever the letter writer with the beautiful and distinctive cursive…the ever heart over the i in Julie. So many, notes, cards, and letters. Beautiful memories and more to hold to my heart.
