John was the son of John K. Muetterties and Theresa (Seiler) Muetterties, Elgin, IL, who predeceased him. He was also predeceased by his sister, Margaret (Muetterties) Meagher, Elgin, IL. John is survived by his loving wife of 64 years, Mary Ann (Tobler). He is also survived by his eight children and their spouses: Andrew (Marsha) Muetterties, Mundelein, IL; Robert (Robyn) Muetterties, Boxford, MA; John Henry (Lisa) Muetterties, Littleton, CO; William (Amy) Muetterties, Lancaster, KY; Jane (Martin Cronk) Muetterties, Boonton Township, NJ; Joseph (Kristin) Muetterties, Centennial, CO; David (Vicky) Muetterties, Roswell, GA; Anne (Bill Hunter) Muetterties, York, PA. In addition, John leaves 17 grandchildren and 2 great grandchildren. John graduated from Elgin High School in Elgin, IL, in 1941 and went on to attend the University of Wisconsin. His college studies were interrupted, as he served for 3 years during WWII in the United States Navy, seeing action in the Pacific and obtaining the rank of Lieutenant. After his discharge, John returned to the University of Wisconsin and graduated in 1948 with a Major in Statistics. John worked as a casualty actuary at the Insurance Department for the State of Wisconsin. From 1955 to 1959 he was employed by the Industrial Indemnity Company, San Francisco, CA, as Casualty Actuary and head of the Actuarial Department. In 1959, he joined Sentry Insurance Company, Stevens Point, WI, as Actuary and Officer in charge of the Property and Casualty Actuarial Department. Mr. Muetterties came to New York City in 1970 to head the Actuarial-Statistical Department of the Insurance Rating Board. Later, he became President for Government and Industry Relations of ISO. John's wisdom and commitment to the actuarial field guided and influenced the careers of many who knew him, young and established alike. In 1978, John became an independent consultant and started MBA Consulting Services in Mountain Lakes, NJ, from which he retired in 2006 at the age of 83. Prior to moving to their apartment 5 years ago at Franciscan Oaks, Denville, NJ, John and Mary Ann made their home in Mountain Lakes, NJ, for 38 years. John was an avid fan of high school sports and faithfully came to watch each of his eight children play in one or more sporting events when they were young. John loved to travel and on vacations, John and Mary Ann journeyed extensively throughout the United States and the world. In more recent years, he and Mary Ann could regularly be seen cheering on the Mountain Lakes High School basketball, football and lacrosse sports teams, and they were both honorary members of the "The Top Row Gang". John will be dearly missed by all who knew and loved him.
